Three years of nature research, in every visitor's pocket.
natur.digital is a mobile app we built for the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment. It turned three years of collected data on animals, plants and landscapes into maps and stories anyone can open on a hike, even without a signal.
See it in action
Nature at every step.
Every animal and plant, up close
Open an animal or plant to see photos, hear its call and read a short story about it.
Maps that show the way
Trails, viewpoints and protected areas on one map, or as a simple list.
Filters and alerts
Filter by species, colour or habitat, switch map types and get warnings for the area you are in.
The transformation
From the archive to the trail.
Before
Three years of nature data sat in reports and government databases.
Visitors had no simple way to learn what lives around them.
Nobody warned hikers when they entered a protected area.
Every new entry needed a developer.
Now
All of it lives in one app for iPhone, Android and the web.
Maps and lists show animals, plants and trails wherever you stand.
The app alerts you as you approach a protected or seasonal zone.
The ministry's editors add and update content themselves.
What else we built for them
Behind the app, four things that make it work outdoors.
They needed answers, not long lists
Search that knows what matters
Ask about bears and the most useful answers come first, ranked by ten factors.
They wanted visitors to take part
Then and now
Visitors upload today's photo of a place and compare it with a historical one.
They wanted nature to come alive
Sound, video and a nature lexicon
Every animal and plant comes with recordings, clips and a short entry.
They needed fresh data without extra work
Data that fills itself
New records flow in automatically from government sources.
